Who Can Be Against Us?…

This verse inspires us to live out our faith without fear:

“If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?”  -Romans 8:31-32, NAB

Being a good Catholic can be scary.  First, we have to give up our past life to live a life according to God’s will.  Then, we will begin to face opposition from some very surprising directions.  At times, it almost seemed easier before we had faith.  Our new life may not be easier, but it is well worth it anyway.

Giving up our past life means that we often have to do a complete 180 degree turn.  We have grown so comfortable in our old way of life, and Christ is asking us for a radical change.  Stepping out of our comfort zone is not something that many of us like to do, but we must do it anyway.

As soon as we begin to turn our lives back around, we will start to meet opposition.  The devil (yes, he’s real) does not want you to turn away from the life you had with him in this world toward a life with Christ.  He will do everything he can to stop you.  You’ll be questioned by family and friends.  They will tempt you to turn back to your old life.  Even your own doubts and fears will make you want to abandon your new life.

We will face opposition.  At times, people will think that you have lost your mind (trust me, I know).  No matter what they may say about you, you know what God wants from you.  You know the life that He wants you to live.  So, stop listening to all of those people who are trying to bring you down, and follow the only one who can really help you.  Let those other people deal with their own problems and make your decisions for yourself.  Just because they are wallowing in misery, it does not mean that you have to as well.

When we live a good Catholic life, it can be lonely at times.  Around our friends at church, many will love and support us for our decisions.  As soon as we step outside of those four walls, our non-Catholic friends and family may question us.  But, if they truly loved you, they would accept you for your decisions.  They would allow you to live your life as you see fit.  Anyone who doesn’t may be someone that you do not need in your life.  It is a harsh reality, but a reality nonetheless.

This verse should inspire you to stand up for what you believe in, despite the opposition you may face.  If you are doing God’s will for your life, what can stop you?  If you have Jesus in your corner, there is no fight that you cannot win.  It is hard to turn our lives around, especially when we meet opposition.  Yet, no matter how much opposition we may face, the Lord will help see you through.
