When You Can’t Find the Right Words to Say
Let the Cross Do the Talking…
The cross offers a more pure wisdom than the words of any man or woman:
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning. -1 Corinthians 1:17, NAB
Have you ever been given an opportunity to share the Gospel, but did not know what to say? Have you struggled to find the right words that might lead someone back to Christ? I have – many times.
Each morning, I sit in front of my computer trying to find the right thing to say. I study the verse of the day to find how it might apply to our lives in a deeper way. I take extra time on Sundays to pick a specific topic that reflects current events, either in the world or in my own life. Some days, this flows naturally. Other days, it does not, and writer’s block gets the best of me.
I love sharing my faith with you on this website, each and every day. Few things give me greater joy than to see positive responses to the things I write. It validates the work I’m doing, and I feel grateful to be able to reach out to so many. I hope the Lord will continue to use me in this way for many years to come.
On the flipside of that coin, there are days that I truly struggle with what to say. I don’t feel inspired. When I try to find the right words to say, I can barely get a sentence out. By the time I’m done, I’ll look back at what I wrote and want to erase it all. It can be quite discouraging.
A few months ago, I ran into a situation like this. At the time, I felt that my writing for the day was quite possibly the worst thing that I had ever written. Short on time, I published it anyway. I feared the response that I would get. My only hope was that people would shrug it off and come back the next day.
To my surprise, one of my wonderful Facebook friends commented on the piece. At first, I was hesitant to read their response. Then, as I read it, he told me that it was one of the greatest writings of mine that he had ever read. I was floored. Not only did he did not criticize it, but instead, he loved it! Simply amazing.
I’m sorry to ramble on about my own struggles as a writer. You may be wondering how this may apply to your life – but please bare with me. What I learned in that time of struggle was just to let go and let God. I may not have been inspired, but the Holy Spirit was – just as He always is. I simply got out of the way of my own prideful self and let God do the talking.
You may or may not be a writer, speaker, or Internet evangelist, but we will all be presented opportunities to share the faith with the world around us. Sometimes, you will know exactly what to say; other times, you won’t. In those times that you can’t find the right words, let Christ and the Holy Spirit do the talking.
There is no more powerful message than the cross. No words could truly describe it. It has the power to change lives and bring salvation to the world. We need to stop leaning on our own abilities and let God take over. When you can’t find the right words to say, let the cross do the talking.
