What Really Matters
Stay Focused on the Spirit…
Do you have the strength to stay focused on what really matters?
For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. -Romans 8:5, NAB
Today is November 25th, one of the final days in the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Our bellies are full from Thanksgiving, our wallets are empty from early Christmas shopping, but are we still praying as fervently for the Holy Souls in Purgatory as we did earlier in the month?
My purpose in asking that question is not to accuse anyone because, by my own admission, I have failed to consistently pray for those in Purgatory myself. I was set back on the right track again, and I thought that I would offer the same thing for you.
When it comes to prayer, we can struggle to even remember to pray for someone one time. Praying a novena can be even more difficult. So a month-long prayer – for any reason – requires a great deal of dedication. With all of the distractions in this world, it is easy to get pulled off course.
It seems like we just celebrated All Souls Day, and now, we are already preparing for Advent and Christmas. Time flies! It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the holiday season and in the things of this world, but I hope that you can spare just a little time each day, in the midst of all of the frenzy, to stay focused on the Spirit.
Our faith should be the center of our lives. Everything we do should stem from our love of God. But can we honestly say that is true? How often do we get distracted by the flesh and lose sight of the Spirit? Unfortunately, it happens all too often.
Today is your wake up call. Throw away the left-overs, let your credit card take a rest, and spend a day focused on God and your faith. One day, if not today, you will be glad that you did.
