What Are You Thankful For?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18….

As we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving Day, we need to reflect on what we are thankful for:

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NAB

As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving Day in the United States, what are you thankful for?  A good job, a nice home, plenty of money in the bank?  Or are you just looking forward to a full day of football and a jump start to your holiday shopping?  While it is great to have these blessings, they cannot compare to the special people in our lives.

Just last night, my wife and I hosted a party of family and friends, and it helped to give me perspective.  The greatest gift we receive and should be thankful for is the people God brings into our lives.  They are the source of true happiness (next to our relationship with God, of course).

I appreciate the hard work my wife put into the party, I am grateful to spend this day with family and friends, and I especially noticed how my wife’s family and friends have become my own – something that means a great deal to me.

This week, I look forward to my daughter coming into town and spending Thanksgiving Day with both of our families.  There’s plenty of football to watch and sales to attend, but these are just distractions from what really matters.  It will be our time around the dinner table together that will be the most memorable.

This year, turn off the TV and wait for Friday morning to get in line for the biggest deals.  Take one day and give it back to your family and friends.  Focus just 24 hours on showing them (and God) that you are thankful to have them in your life.

To my family and friends reading this today, I love you.  I am thankful to have you in my life.  I am thankful that my wife’s family and friends accept me as their own.  If I don’t say it enough, I appreciate the moments we spend together.  Thank you.
