The Heart of Christmas
During this Advent season, let us prepare our hearts by remembering this verse:
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. -Matthew 6:21, NAB
Recently, my wife had the opportunity to hear Carolyn King, a Catholic speaker, share a bit about preparing ourselves during Advent to remember what’s truly at the heart of Christmas: Christ. My wife came home that night energized and excited for the holiday season.
The message was simple: we need to make room in our hearts for Christ this Advent. Over 2,000 years ago, there was no room at the inn when Christ was born, and today, our lives of distraction have hung out the same “No Vacancy” sign.
We get caught up in buying gifts, hanging lights, and decorating trees, yet forget the true reason for the season. I love all of those things as much as the next person – they truly make the holiday fun – but they are not what the heart of Christmas is all about.
We need to make room in our lives this holiday season to prepare our hearts for Christ. We need to re-focus our lives on the awesome gift that came in a manger. Christmas is not about big presents, 7-foot trees, and mistletoe; it’s about a child born in the town of Bethlehem who would one day become our Savior.
There may not have been any room at the inn 2,000 years ago, but we can make room for Christ in our hearts this Advent. This Christmas, open your heart to Christ and begin this year with a renewed faith and fervor for Christ.
