Saved Through Faith
Not by Works
One of the largest pitfalls for many Catholics and Christians alike is the belief that we can somehow earn our way to heaven. Yet, no matter what we do, it is only by God’s grace that we are saved.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9 NAB
We can give all that we own to the poor. Our time can be spent working with a dozen different charities. We can go to Mass each and every week without fail. But, if we do not have faith, none of these things will save us. No matter how hard we try, we cannot earn our way into heaven. Our works would not be enough. Luckily, we do not have to earn God’s grace. If we did have to earn our way into heaven through works, most, if not all, of us would fall short of receiving God’s grace.
We cannot do it alone. Christ showed us the way, and He gave us the keys to our salvation. Through faith in Christ, we can be saved. This has to be a true, authentic faith. Simply running around telling people that we believe in Christ is not enough. We must actually believe and have faith that He is our Savior. Only then can we receive the grace of His redemption.
Please, by no means does this mean to stop giving to charity, serving faithfully, or going to Mass. We should continue to do all of these things. Let our works be evidence to the world of the faith that we have in Christ. As we grow in faith, our works will shine through. Faith and belief in Christ will compel you to do more. He will pull at your heart, and you will want to do more for His kingdom. Follow where He leads you, and let your good works be an example of what faith can do in our lives.
