If God is for Us…
With God by our side, there is nothing that can stop us:
“What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ (Jesus) who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?” -Romans 8:31-35 NAB
Today’s verse holds a special meaning for me as it is one of the verses I chose to be read during my wedding Mass. My wife and I chose this reading because we confidently feel God’s work in our lives. No matter what obstacles we may face, we trust in the Lord to pull us through.
More and more each day, it seems as if religion is under attack. By living out our faith and values in the public square, we are called intolerant and judgmental. Yet, when others live out their values in the public square, we are asked to accept them without question. Christians, and especially Catholics, are being attacked for their faith in very real ways.
At times, it is not just society at large that attacks our faith. Sometimes, it can be some of the people closest to us in our lives – our family, friends, and coworkers. They may not attack your faith, but they may challenge it. Has someone close to you questioned you for your choices? Has someone close to you challenged your beliefs?
Regardless of who may come against us, do not fear because the Lord is by our side. When you face opposition for your Catholic beliefs, turn to God for help, and He will guide you, protect you, and keep you strong. The world cannot match the awesome power of God in our lives.
As I said before, I chose this verse for my wedding, and it holds a very special meaning for me. My wife and I faced some very real obstacles during our courtship, and without the hand of God in our lives, we may not have made it. Opposition came from places we did not expect, and it slowed us down at times; however, throughout those times of struggle we faced, we clung to our faith and turned to God to see us through.
“No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 8:37-39, NAB
