Pray With the Spirit…

Let the Holy Spirit guide you in prayer:

“In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.” -Romans 8:26 NAB

Ever feel at a loss for words when it comes time to pray?  Have you ever felt like you really do not know how to pray at all?  Sometimes, we see other people praying like a warrior, and it makes us feel self-conscious about our ability to pray.  Don’t worry.  It’s something everyone faces at one time or another.

I’ve never met anyone who said that they did not struggle with prayer at one point in their life.  For the most part, everyone struggles with it.  It seems that no one wakes up one day as a prayer champion.  Usually, prayer champions are made by putting in the time and effort to work hard at prayer, and in time, just about anyone can become a prayer champion.

When we look at people who are really connected to their life of prayer, they are not that good at prayer because of the words they use or their ability to quote Scripture.  No, they are good at prayer because they are good at getting in touch with the Holy Spirit.  They can let go of themselves and focus on truly connecting with God.  It’s not about what they can do, but about what they allow the Holy Spirit to do through them.

When you pray, do not try to use language that is outside of your vocabulary.  Also, don’t try to become a poet with a consistent beat and tempo.  Instead, just let go.  Stop thinking and start praying.  Simply open your heart to God and allow everything to come pouring out.  Our hearts and souls were naturally made to pour out everything for God; we just have to open them up and let our deepest thoughts and emotions come rushing out.
