Children of God…

There is no love like the Father’s love:

“For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’ The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.” -Romans 8:15-17 NAB

Today is Valentine’s Day, a day in which we celebrate the love we have for one another.  Everywhere we go, there will be pink and red hearts, little cupids, and plenty of romance in the air, but in the midst of our celebrations, let us not forget the love that conquers all others – the love of our Father.

The stories of St. Valentine say that he was martyred for marrying couples in ancient Rome, but why would he be martyred simply for helping two couples join together in marriage?  It was not simply marriage that he sacrificed his life for, but marriages in communion with God.  This holiday, then, should be as much about honoring God as the center of our relationships, as it is the love we have for one another as man and wife.

If the Father was not willing to send His Son to die for us on the cross, would we truly understand the depths of love?  His perfect love is an example for us to follow, but so perfect that we can never attain it.  God loves us in so many ways that it shaped the very world in which we live.  From the creation of man and woman to sending His Son to the cross, God has shown us His love since the beginning.

Before we can ever be lovers, we must first be children of God.  Before we can call each other man and wife, we must first call on the name of the Father.  Through our love for one another, we have received a great gift, but that gift pales in comparison to the awesome love that we receive from our loving God.  On this day, as we acknowledge each other through gifts and acts of love, let us first acknowledge our love for the One who created us in the first place.

May you find peace, happiness, and love this Valentine’s Day.
