Does the Law Cause Sin?…
Is the Law what leads us to sin? No, it definitely is not:
“For when we were in the flesh, our sinful passions, awakened by the law, worked in our members to bear fruit for death… What then can we say? That the law is sin? Of course not! Yet I did not know sin except through the law, and I did not know what it is to covet except that the law said, ‘You shall not covet.’ But sin, finding an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetousness. Apart from the law sin is dead.” -Romans 7:5-8 NAB
Is the Law what causes sin? No. Through the Law, we become aware of our sins, but we sin whether we know the Law or not. It is our wicked hearts that cause us to sin. It is our weakness, our lust, and our desires. But, if we do not know the Law, we do not know that we are sinners, so are we better off not knowing the Law?
If we do not know the Law, then we cannot acknowledge our sin. It is for that reason that I believe so many reject the faith. They can make all of the excuses that they want, but the truth is the truth. You can hide from the truth all that you want, but it does not make it any less true.
Each week, there are people sitting in the pews afraid to really dive into their faith. How do I know this? Because I have been there, done that. It’s much easier to go through the motions. If we get to know our faith better, one thing we’ll find out is what we’re doing wrong. Some people don’t want to know, and they are comfortable right where they’re at.
Eventually, I decided to jump in. I decided that it was time to take my faith, and my God, seriously. I knew that sitting on the sidelines was not the answer. And, I knew that playing ignorant would not excuse me from anything. When you get pulled over by the police, you can play ignorant to the rules of the road, but you will still get a ticket. In the same way, when God pulls you over, you can’t escape the Law.
The Law is the Law. We can run from it, or even pretend that it does not exist. Or, on the other hand, we can embrace the Law, allow it to guide our lives, and begin to make our way back to the loving arms of Christ. The choice is yours.
