It is our willingness that provides the opportunity:
“For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it put me to death.” -Romans 7:11 NAB
When you first read the headline, you probably thought that this would be an essay on seizing the moment, taking the opportunity that is in front of you, or making the most out of the possibilities that come into our lives. Instead, I went in a completely different direction. Sorry, I had to get your attention somehow.
Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about today’s verse. Sin found “an opportunity in the commandment.” In other words, it found opportunity in the established Law, but not by the imperfection of the Law. Instead, it is through our imperfections that sin finds opportunity.
Sin would not take a grip on our lives if we did not give it the opportunity. If you open yourself up to sin, it will invade every nook and cranny of your being. It will start by attacking one aspect of your life, but it will then spread itself until it is fully entrenched into your being.
Do not let sin take root in your life. But, if it has, you must take action to weed it out. And, just like weeding, you cannot just pull sin off of the surface; you have to pull it out from its roots. Only by getting to the very base of your sinful life will you be able to rid yourself of sin.
Life presents us with abundant oppportunities – opportunities for good, and opportunities for sin. Which opportunities you take advantage of are entirely up to you.
