The Power of One…
It is amazing how one person can change the world:
“…just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so through one righteous act acquittal and life came to all… For just as through the disobedience of one person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one the many will be made righteous.” -Romans 5:18-19 NAB
In the case of Adam, one person caused the whole world to fall into sin. Well, in my mind, it was actually two (Adam and Eve both played their parts). In the case of Christ, one Person – as in one Person of the Trinity – came to save the whole world. Simply amazing!
What began with the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden quickly multiplied. The number of sinners grew exponentially with each generation. Two became four. Four became eight. Eight became sixteen. This continued until we are now over 7 billion sinners worldwide, but that’s nothing to be proud of. Through one act of transgression, 7 billion people now face condemnation and judgment.
Let’s go a little deeper with the math. If each of the 7 billion people in the world sins just once a day, that is 2.5 trillion sins a year. Multiply that by the 2000+ years since Christ, and we are at 5.1 quadrillion (yes, it’s a word) sins since the time of Christ. That number looks like: 5,138,105,000,000,000. Despite all of that sin, in one act, Christ overcame it all.
It’s amazing to think of how much sin is in the world. I’m sure that few have ever tried to quantify it, but there it is. And that may be a low estimate! Assuming that we only sin once a day is probably FAR too low, and the number is probably much larger than that. Either way, it is a staggering number nonetheless, and it should truly show us the power of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
One act led to 7 billion sinners, but one more act led to 5 quadrillion sins that can be forgiven. We may not have the impact that Christ did, obviously, but what kind of impact are you making? One simple act of kindness, love, or charity can cause a ripple effect beyond what we could ever imagine. Never underestimate the power of one, and definitely, never underestimate the power of The One!
