Examine Scripture

Romans 3:10-18

Share the Faith

Today’s verse is one of the most harsh verses in the Bible:

“…as it is written: ‘There is no one just, not one, there is no one who understands, there is no one who seeks God. All have gone astray; all alike are worthless; there is not one who does good, (there is not) even one. Their throats are open graves; they deceive with their tongues; the venom of asps is on their lips; their mouths are full of bitter cursing. Their feet are quick to shed blood; ruin and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace they know not. There is no fear of God before their eyes.'” -Romans 3:10-18 NAB

This verse may seem harsh, but that does not make it any less true.  The stone cold fact is that not one of us is worthy of God’s grace.  Not one of us will ever be able to earn our way into redemption and everlasting life.

Most people like to read spiritually uplifting verses, but we also need to hear the spiritual truth.  To truly know and understand the depths of God’s mercy and forgiveness, we have to first understand the depths of our wickedness.  If we continue to convince ourselves that we are “generally good people,” then we will never be able to see the full measure of God.

I am not going to lecture you on the depths of your wickedness.  Trust me, I have my hands full dealing with my own failings.  So, take a moment today, reflect on this verse, and explore the darkness of your heart.  When we can clearly see the darkness, it makes it much easier to see the Light.
