As Easter nears, may our voices be heard:
For whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Romans 15:4-6, NAB
During the Advent season, we often hear phrases like “keep Christ in Christmas.” The goal is for us to stay focused on the true meaning of the season. Well, the same can be said for the Lenten season – we must keep our focus on the true meaning of Easter.
As we look around grocery stores and the big box stores, we are bombarded with aisles and aisles of Easter goodies – egg coloring kits, colorful baskets, and those little marshmallow Peeps. Just this year, I saw the return of an old Cadbury Creme Egg commercial. These images dominate how the majority of the people in the Western world see Easter, and it is time to change that.
Easter is not about colored eggs, bunnies with floppy ears, or baskets full of treats. Easter is about the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, who saved us by sacrificing His own life on the cross. As Christians, we need to unite as one voice to share this message with the world.
As Catholics, we need to make our voice heard, but practicing Catholics are only a small percentage of the population these days. However, if we unite with our Christian brethren to spread one message about the love of Jesus Christ, we can make a larger impact on the world around us.
May our common love of Jesus Christ, regardless of our denomination, unite us together as one voice for our Lord this Easter.
