Love One Another…
Love is at the center of who we are as Christians:
“Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.” -Romans 12:9-10, NAB
In the next few verses, St. Paul is going to guide us on the appropriate attitudes and behaviors for Christians, and he decides to begin this list with love. Why love? Because everything we are and everything we do as Christians flows from it.
Let’s break down today’s verse, line by line:
Let love be sincere – love is not love if it is not true love.
Hate what is evil – it is not enough to simply avoid it.
Hold on to what is good – hold tight because it is easy to lose grasp of it.
Love one another with mutual affection – love is not a one way street.
Anticipate one another in showing honor – don’t wait to receive, but be willing to give it.
This one verse says so much about who we are as Christians. It lays the foundation of how we should live our lives, and it is all built on love. Love is more than the subject of romantic comedies and tear-jerking dramas; it is a very real emotion, and it is the glue that holds together our relationships.
From the time you wake up until the moment your head hits the pillow again, let love guide you each and every day.
