Hope, Affliction, and Prayer…
Romans continues to sound more like Proverbs as St. Paul continues his message with more wise words:
“Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.” -Romans 12:12, NAB
We learn today how to cope with life’s ups and downs. There will be times of joy and hope, but there will also be times of affliction and suffering. What’s they key to managing all of it? Prayer.
No one is more guilty of forgetting to rejoice than I am. By no means am I ungrateful, but I am the type that does not get overly excited, both negatively and positively. So, while this helps me through the dark times, it is actually a weakness during the good times, and I am sure that I am not alone.
We must remember to put as much energy into rejoicing as we do enduring the tough times. When we are struggling, all of our thoughts and energies go into managing our situation, but when things are going well for us, we sometimes forget to put any energy into rejoicing and being thankful for the blessings that God has given us.
Regardless of what stage of life we are in, a time of rejoicing or a time of affliction, it is prayer that will keep us grounded. It is prayer that will help us persevere. Through prayer, we can express to God how truly grateful we are during our times of joy, and also through prayer, we can ask God for the strength to endure our afflictions.
Life will continue to be a roller coaster full of peaks and valleys of joy and sorrow, but we must allow our prayer and communication with God to help us rejoice in our times of hope and endure our times of affliction.
