Understanding God…

Who can know and understand the mind of God?

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?'” -Romans 11:33-34, NAB

Are there times when you become upset with God because you do not understand His ways?  Are there times when you are confused by what is happening in your life?  You are not alone.  This is a very real feeling that many of us will go through at one point or another.

Why do bad things happen to good people?  There can be so many reasons.  First, it may have been our choices, or the choices of others, that led us into difficult situations.  We often look to place the blame on someone, but we may need to just look in the mirror.  Other times, it may not be anyone’s fault at all.  We may be going through a time of trial simply to refine our faith.  Knowing why we face certain trials can be difficult, and sometimes, we never really find an answer.

All we have are questions and more questions.  We get upset with God and turn to Him for answers.  But who are we to demand anything from our Creator?  And, if He did give us an answer, would we really understand it anyway?  Probably not.

For God to explain His ways to us would be like trying to explain the science of astrophysics in a kindergarten classroom.  We simply do not have the level of understanding needed to comprehend the mysteries of life. Yet, we will try anyway, and we will often throw a temper tantrum until we find out.  We are like a child who constantly asks “why?”

Why do we feel the need to have all of the answers?  There are times that we simply need to let go and trust God.  Instead of having an explanation of why we should do something or why we are in a particular situation, we just need to follow where God is leading us.  Can you let go… and let God?
