Disrespecting God…

What happens when we disrespect God?

“The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them.” -Romans 1:18-19, NAB

So, again, what happens when we disrespect God?  We face his full wrath against us.

In this verse, Paul talks about wickedness and every impiety.  Impiety, in this sense, means a complete lack of respect for God.  Combined with wickedness, he is speaking about those who go against the truth that we know in Christ, and the truth taught by the Church.  For that, they will not escape God’s wrath.

The worst part of this situation is that Paul is talking about people who know the truth, but they act wicked anyway.  If someone has never heard the Gospel message, that is one thing, but he is telling us about those who have heard the truth yet continue their wicked ways regardless.  In the Western world, this is all too common.  Most people have heard the Gospel message, but how many choose to follow the ways of Christ?  Many people, even though they have heard the Gospel message, continue to reject Him anyway.

Unfortunately, there is no better time to see the reality of this than the Advent season.  As our nation celebrates Christmas together, many celebrate the holiday, but they do not respect it as a holy day. For them, it is a time to get together with family, max out their credit cards, and eat lots of cookies.  Somehow, God, Jesus, and the Nativity just don’t fit into the picture.

We are only days away from Christmas.  Let’s take these last few days before this awesome celebration to make sure that we show the world the true meaning of Christmas, and let’s help those we love escape the wrath of God and begin to respect the truth we know through Christ and the Holy Spirit.
