Answering the Call…
At Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit:
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. -Acts 2:1-4, NAB
Since WakingUpCatholic.com started in February of last year (2011), there have been some changes. I have added a comment system, updated the look, tweaked it for speed, and recently, I added a reviews section. But, despite all of those changes, one change made possibly the biggest impact – Daily Bible Verses. At Pentecost, I went from writing Weekly Bible Verses to Daily Bible Verses. One whole liturgical year has passed, and I can honestly tell you that I still enjoy writing them every day.
Pentecost is a time when we celebrate the birth of the Church, and it is often overlooked for its importance. We seem to take the gift of the Holy Spirit for granted. Imagine not having the Holy Spirit working in our lives – how different would the Church be?
The Holy Spirit works in our lives in many ways, but one of the most important is through the various gifts that we receive. The Church actually defines seven gifts of the Holy Spirit:
- Fear of the Lord
These wonderful gifts are just the beginning. We are each given unique gifts in our talents, skills, and knowledge. For me, my knowledge of technology is a gift. Also, my passion for writing. The list goes on. Each of us will receive more than one gift; the question is, what do we do with our gifts?
Going back to the beginning, last year, I answered the call by committing myself to write every day. Let me tell you, it’s not always easy. Every day, I wake up early before work and write the day’s message. Sometimes, it can be hard to be “inspired” at 6 am – I’m not exactly a morning person.
So, how are you answering the call? God has given you very unique and special gifts, but how are you going to use them for His purposes? It’s one of the most important answers you’ll ever come up with. If you haven’t figured out how to answer it yet, that’s okay, but it’s time to really, earnestly put it to prayer.
Today, let’s celebrate the birth of the Church with a renewed sense of purpose. We must commit ourselves to go beyond the pews and serve the Lord with the gifts He has given us. And, that, quite possibly, is the best birthday gift we can give the Church.
