O You of Little Faith
One of the most difficult challenges we will face is letting go and trusting in God during our times of trouble:
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, (Jesus) came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once (Jesus) spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” -Matthew 14:24-33, NAB
Here we see Peter, the Rock that our Church was built upon, struggling to trust in Jesus. He had seen everything that Jesus had done, including as a witness to many of His miracles. In fact, Jesus had just fed the 5,000 with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. Peter, the Rock, still could not remain steadfast in his faith.
In this verse, Peter truly was the Rock – he began sinking quickly. As fast as Peter was sinking, at least he stepped out of the boat. Many of us, if we found ourselves in the same position, would have a difficult time even stepping out of the boat in the first place. At least Peter was willing to do that!
When Christ calls you to step out of the boat, will you have the courage to take that first step? As the waves crash and the wind tries to blow you down, will you remain steadfast in your faith? There will be times that we will all be called out of the boat, but the choice is completely up to us – take that first step or stay safely where we are?
