Signs from God…

Are you still waiting for a large billboard to tell you that God loves you?

The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”  -Mark 8:11-12, NAB

Why are we constantly waiting for a sign or miracle from God?  Why are we constantly looking for proof of His existence?  We want tangible ways to know the God is here in our lives, in ways that we can see and feel, but, who are we to test God in this way?

Jesus had performed many miracles, yet the Pharisees still wanted a sign from Him.  He had healed the sick, fed thousands of people in miraculous ways, and even drove demons and evil spirits out of people, yet that was still not enough.  Did they want miracles that affected them personally?  How often do we ask for the same?

Stories of God’s miracles are plentiful.  He has touched so many lives in ways that we cannot even begin to comprehend.  Somehow, that is still not enough for us.  We hear about someone being healed of cancer, so we want healing in our lives.  We hear about the lives of the poor that He has touched, but we are not satisfied until He brings us a new job.  Until He touches our lives personally, we stubbornly refuse to have faith.

Stop waiting, and demanding, for signs from God.  If you are looking for signs of His presence, they are all around you.  He may not come and help you find a better job, cure you of your sickness, or help you win the lottery, but that does not mean that He is not present in Your life.  In other words, we need to stop living according to our plan – and start living according to His.

If we are looking for proof that God exists, we only need to look at the life of Jesus.  If we are looking for proof that God loves us, we only need to look at the cross.  We may never experience a miracle first-hand, but that’s okay; we have a God whose extraordinary love should fill our ordinary lives.
