Can You Hear Him?…

Jesus help the deaf hear and the mute speak:

And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And (immediately) the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.  -Mark 7:32-35, NAB

The world is full of noise. We are bombarded with television, movies, the Internet, music, and a number of other sounds to fill our eardrums. What if we did not have the gift of hearing?  What would the world be like if we got rid of all of the noise?

We may have the gift of being able to hear the physical world around us, but can we hear when God is speaking to us?  Are we deaf to God because of the noise of this world?  Do our wants, desires, fears, and frustrations block us from hearing the Holy Spirit?  God desperately wants to speak with us, but we must first quiet the noise.

Just as Jesus healed this man’s physical hearing, He can heal our spiritual ears, as well.  Through faith, prayer, and a little patience, we can begin to hear God’s will for our lives.  When we are facing hard times, He wants to share words of encouragement.  When we are in times of joy, He wants to celebrate with us.  But, we will never hear Him if we fail to open up our ears.

Jesus also healed this man’s speech impediment, and we may need this same healing.  Speaking to God begins in the heart, and regardless of whether we make an audible sound or not, God will hear us.  While we focus on the words that come out of our mouths,  the words that come out of our hearts are what truly matters.

Once we learn to speak to God, He can heal our speech outwardly also.  This may be standing on a stage, evangelizing to a crowd, or it may simply be a casual conversation with a loved one.  When we speak from the heart – when we speak out of love – we speak on behalf of God.

There is no more important conversation that we will have in a day than the moments we spend in prayer with God.  Let Christ bring healing to your spiritual hearing, so that you may hear God more clearly.  Let Christ bring healing to your spiritual voice, so that you can speak to God more openly.  Prayer helps to build the foundation of a stronger faith, and the first step is quieting the noise to have a conversation with God.
