As a preacher, Jesus didn’t get many followers in His own hometown :
He departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. He went around to the villages in the vicinity teaching. -Mark 6:1-6, NAB
When Jesus went home, no one seemed to listen to Him. If anything, many of them were actually upset with Him. Imagine His neighbors thoughts: “Who does he think he is? Come on, isn’t this the carpenter, Joseph and Mary’s boy? Now, He thinks He is some kind of rabbi? Who’s He kidding, anyway.”
Admittedly, we might think the same thing. Here is a guy whom you had known for many years. You saw Him grow up, work with His father, and just be a normal guy. It would be tough to let go of that image of Him. To now accept Him as the Son of God would be difficult. For that reason, Jesus did not have much luck in His own hometown.
Personally, I can attest to this in my own life. Few people that knew me prior to my conversion to Catholicism take it very seriously. Few know that I write, fewer take it seriously, and even fewer actually read it. Trying to preach in your own neighborhood may be one of the most difficult things we will ever do.
Do you have struggles like this? When you tell your friends, family, and neighbors about the changes God has brought into your life, what is their reaction? Well, if they reject and laugh at you, you are not alone. Actually, you’re in pretty good company – Jesus to be exact.
Stop worrying if your friends and family do not take you seriously. Let it go. Some will. Some won’t. It didn’t bother Jesus – He just moved on. So should you.
