Knowing God’s Ways…
Can we ever fully understand the mystery of God’s ways?
(Jesus) said,”This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” -Mark 4:26-29, NAB
In this beautiful verse, Jesus continues the parable of the sower and the seed from earlier in Mark 4. He continues by telling us that the sower may know how to sow the seed, but he does not understand what actually causes the seed to grow. This is the mystery of God.
We learned in the parable of the sower and the seed that we must plant our seed on fertile ground in order to make it grow. This fertile ground is faith rooted in our Lord, Jesus Christ. But, how does Christ do to make it grow? Scholars will debate over the various aspects of faith that produce a good life, but truly, only Christ really knows how He works in our lives.
In the end of this verse, Jesus concludes with the harvesting of the grain, which is unique to the Gospel of Mark. When the grain is finally ripe, it will be time to harvest, just as our lives will continue to grow until they are fully ripe. Only then, when the whole field is ripe and ready for harvest, will Christ come back.
We will never understand God’s ways, and we will also never truly know when He will come back for the harvest. Our goal, then, should not be to understand what makes the seeds of our faith grow, but simply ensure that they have been planted in rich soil. That way, when the time for the harvest comes, our souls will be ready.
