Go Forth and Share the Good News…
In the final verse of the Gospel of St. Mark, the Apostles answered Jesus’ call in the Great Commission:
But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. -Mark 16:20, NAB
There could be no better way to end the Gospel of St. Mark than the Apostles heading out into the world to share the Good News. They had seen Jesus preach. They had witnessed the miracles He performed. They were present in the upper room – some of the few to have seen the risen Christ. Now, they went out to tell the world.
Would there be over 2 billion Christians in the world today if it had not been for the work of the early Church? The final verse of Mark shows us that this not the end of the story; it’s only the beginning. The next chapter of the story begins in Acts and continues through the New Testament.
Another great thing to notice is that they did not go alone; the Lord was with them every step of the way. He may not have been physically present with them anymore, but He was spiritually there. Similarly, as we go out into the world, we can be confident that the Lord is with us.
Believe it or not, we began our study of Mark way back in April, just after Divine Mercy Sunday. It has taken us over five months to get to where we are today. What is our next step? Just as the Apostles went out to preach to the world, we must do the same. It is time to share what you have learned to all who will listen.
Of course, I am not going to end our studies there. We have now finished Mark, and we studied Romans, 1 & 2 Peter, and 1 Corinthians before that. Now, we will move onto St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians. We will read along as St. Paul pleads to the Galatians to hold firm to the truth, as false teaching becomes prevalent in their society.
At times, it was challenging to make our way through the entire Gospel of St. Mark, but understanding the Gospel story is an important part of our faith. Similarly, understanding the rest of the New Testament helps us to understand the role of the early Church. Continue to follow along as we begin our next study on the book of Galatians.
