Hold Nothing Back…

In today’s verse, Jesus is led to the place of His crucifixion:

They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated Place of the Skull). They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.  -Mark 15:22-23, NAB

This short, seemingly unimportant verse actually teaches us a couple of lessons.  First, we are reminded that Jesus said that He would not drink of the vine again until He reached His Father’s Kingdom, which we learned in an earlier verse (read more on Mark 14:25):

Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” -Mark 14:25, NAB

By refusing to take the wine, Jesus is fulfilling His own prophecy.  He knew that the time for Him to drink of the vine had not yet come, so He refused something that would have brought Him comfort.  This is the second lesson.  Jesus could have been relieved of some of His pain, but He chose to fully experience the cross.

Crucifixion was a torturous death.  Add Christ’s badly beaten and scourged body, and we realize that He must have been in excruciating pain.  Yet He refused the wine, drugged with myrhh, that could have eased His suffering.  Jesus came to give His life fully to us, and He did not want to lessen that in any way.

Christ gave Himself completely on the cross – regardless of the pain.  Do we give ourselves completely over to Him, or are we holding back?  He was willing to endure great physical torture and hardship, but we struggle to endure the smallest trials.  Truly, Jesus showed the depths of His love for us by not holding anything back.

Hold nothing back.  Give your life, fully and completely, over to Christ.  Christ gave everything so that we may have the gift of eternal life.  In return, we should be willing to give the same.  We may not have to endure anything remotely similar to Jesus, but we can still offer up our entire lives to Him anyway – whatever it may cost.
