Beyond showing the world the love of Christ by quoting Scripture, make a deeper impact by living Scripture:
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. -Matthew 5:14-16, NAB
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a wedding of some close friends, and in more ways than one, it made me realize that we can be much more effective at sharing the faith by what we do than what we say.
First, during the ceremony, the couple shared their love for each other, but they also witnessed to the attendees as they shared their common love for God. This was an amazing way to evangelize by their own example.
Later in the evening, the opportunity to share our faith presented itself to my wife and me. We ran into one of my wife’s friends from high school. She had not seen or talked to her in quite awhile (outside of Facebook, that is), but we quickly found that we shared many things in common.
The woman and her husband are newlyweds, and they are hoping to have a baby soon. They have been trying for a couple of months but nothing yet. This is a struggle that my wife and I know all too well. We constantly saw others that were pregnant and eagerly awaited the moment that God would give us this blessing.
In this situation, we were able to share our own experiences with them and show our faith in a different way. Instead of quoting Scripture and actively trying to evangelize them, we simply shared our experiences. We let the impact Christ had on our life do all the talking.
Knowing of our Catholic faith, they obviously saw the impact faith had on our lives. By showing them how to put their lives into God’s hands with our actions, we probably had a greater impact on these two than our words could ever do.
What’s the moral of the story? We often try to evangelize and share our faith by quoting Scripture, but living Scripture can be much more effective. People may be moved by hearing what Scripture can do, but they will be more deeply moved when they see it.
Today, join me in praying for the new couple that joined in marriage yesterday, and offer a special prayer for that young couple eagerly awaiting a child. May God bless both of these young families.
