Light of the World…

Let your life be an example for others to follow:

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. -Matthew 5:14-16, NAB

We never know the impact that we will have on other people.  Sometimes, we do our best evangelization when we are not trying to evangelize at all.  Recently, I was blessed with this type of experience, and it truly shows the power of God working in our lives.

For my shameless promotion of Waking Up Catholic, I had a large vinyl decal made for the back window of my car.  One of my neighbors, who was facing some tough times, had noticed that sticker as I came and went from the house.  Every time that he walked past my car, it seemed to be calling him to something more.

Growing up in a Catholic home, he was not new to the faith, but he had not been to church since his childhood.  Now, as an adult facing divorce and a myriad of other problems, he began to wonder if he could find healing in the Catholic Church.  He began to have flashbacks to his childhood, and he eventually got the courage to come speak to me and my wife about our faith.

Spending time getting to know our neighbor, and now our friend, we learned that he had been going to one of the local mega churches.  Yet he still felt that something was missing.  He missed the Tradition of the Catholic Church and wanted to find out what he needed to do next.  The following week, he joined us at Sunday Mass.

Now, let me say a few things.  First, I do not want to discount the work of that nondenominational church.  True, we do not see eye to eye on many topics, but they were helping him with the first step towards faith – developing a relationship with Jesus Christ.  For that, I commend their work (we’ll work on converting all of them later – wink, wink).

Second, I am not, by any means, saying there was anything I did that changed this man’s life.  It was the work of the Holy Spirit that made the difference.  My wife and I simply let the light of Christ shine through us.  Actually, when we try to do the work ourselves, we often fail.  When we leave the work up to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, amazing things can happen!

Let the world see the light of Christ shining from you.  Whether it is on a bumper sticker, from the words that come from your mouth, or, most importantly, your actions, our faith should be evident to the world – not for our benefit, but for the world’s.  God can do amazing things; we can be His instrument.

Now, you are probably wondering about our neighbor and friend.  What happened to him?  Well, he just shared with me the other night that he will be starting RCIA later this year.  He feels that his life is beginning to heal and is excited about his new relationship with Christ.  May God be praised and to God all of the glory.
