In a society where we want everything now, it can be difficult to wait on the Lord:
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. -James 5:7-8, NAB
Patience is a virtue, but not a common one. Waiting on the Lord’s will to happen in His timing – not ours – is a challenge. Submitting to His will, then, requires poise and a strong composure.
Normally, we like to see results. We know that by taking action we can have a direct and sometimes immediate impact on our lives. Yet there are times when our best efforts to make things happen do not seem to do any good.
The problem is that we have a limited view of the future. Our view of the world is clouded by our current circumstances and our distorted look at what might happen. The Lord can see a clear picture of our future, so we need to trust in His ability to lead us in the right direction.
This verse from James 5 talks specifically about the coming of the Lord, but the same theory applies to almost any situation. We need to make our hearts firm, be patient, and wait for the Lord’s timing.
Faith encompasses many things, including patience. Have faith in the Lord, trust in His timing, and a wonderful future will await you.
