Draw Near to God….
Until we draw near to God, our relationship with Him will never improve:
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds. -James 4:8, NAB
We want God close to us in our times of trouble yet keep Him at a distance otherwise. We want the best of both worlds: a relationship with God when it’s convenient and a distant deity when it’s not.
Well, it doesn’t work that way.
In these Bible reflections, I speak often of the impact that a relationship with Christ can have on our lives. He protects us, strengthens us, renews us, and gives us hope. But before any of that can happen, we need to establish a relationship with God first.
Drawing near to Christ simultaneously pulls us away from the world. We will immediately begin to notice a difference in our lives. Yet as we draw closer to Him, the stains and filth of our sins become much more apparent, and before we can come any closer, we need to cleanse ourselves first.
Remember coming home from playing outside as a child. You were filthy. All of that running around and playing in the mud left you dirty from head to toe, and before you sat down at the clean dinner table, your mother told you to wash up first.
As we draw near to God, and as we sit down with Him at the table of the Eucharist, we want to do so with clean hands and a clean spirit. We want to rid ourselves of the stains that keep us at a distance.
Cleanse your mind, your heart, and your spirit through the power of the Sacraments, and a deeper relationship with God awaits.
