Grace to the Humble….

The greatest obstacle to receiving God’s grace is our own pride and arrogance:

…do you suppose that the scripture speaks without meaning when it says, “The spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward jealousy”? But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”  -James 4:5-6, NAB

Talk to people who are not engaged in their faith, and they will give a thousand excuses why they are not.

“I want to go to church, but…”  “I’ve tried to pray more, but…”  “I believe in Christ, but…”

But, but, but.  They are trying to find an excuse for their lack of faith, yet the only thing really standing in their way is their own self-interests.  In humility, if they would simply admit it, they would be taking the first step towards receiving God’s grace.

We need to accept responsibility for our actions and admit that our narcissistic view of life is the problem.  How can we ever see Christ if we never stop looking in the mirror?

The world around us may be in trouble, but that doesn’t mean we have to share the same fate.  God will give grace to the humble, which can include every one of us.  Shatter the mirror in front of you and turn your focus to the cross.

Christ died in humility, and He offers His grace to all those who follow His example.  Are you humble enough to take up your own cross and follow Him?
