James 4:4

An Enemy of God….

When we choose the world, we become an enemy of God:

Adulterers! Do you not know that to be a lover of the world means enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God.  -James 4:4, NAB

These harsh words may be difficult to hear, but they are the truth.  If we choose to put our wants, needs, and desires of this world before our relationship with God, we are driving a wedge between Him and us.

In Matthew 6:24, Jesus tells us,

“No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”  -Matthew 6:24, NAB

According to Merriam-Webster, mammon is wealth or greed.  So we are warned, multiple times, to not let our pursuit of wealth and status to overcome us.  Greed cannot become the central focus of our lives.

This can be difficult.  The world around us seems to be consumed with greed.  You don’t have to be a millioinaire to be greedy.  Greed is an affliction that strikes the rich and poor equally.

We cannot serve two masters.  We cannot serve both God and our worldly desires at the same time.  We have a choice, then: let go of our greed and follow Christ or risk becoming an enemy of God.  What choice will you make?
