Big Ship, Small Rudder….
Our words may have a greater impact that we realize:
It is the same with ships: even though they are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot’s inclination wishes. In the same way the tongue is a small member and yet has great pretensions. -James 3:4-5, NAB
St. James continues to discuss how our words can have an effect on the direction of our lives. He compares our tongues to the rudder of a ship – it may be small but ultimately decides where we are headed.
If we take the Lord’s name in vain, then we will not honor Him with our actions either. If we tear down others with our words, we will not show them love as children of God. If we only speak about ourselves, we will continue to be selfish and only serve our own needs.
There are many examples of how the foul words of our mouth will lead us to a wretched life, but the opposite can be true, as well.
Honor the Lord with praise, and you will draw closer to Him. Lift up others with kindness and affection, and your relationships will thrive. Spend more time talking about the needs of others, and you will honor them as your brothers and sisters in Christ.
Like the rudder of a ship, our tongue may be small but can have a big impact on the direction of our lives. Let your words be honest and true, and your life will surely follow.
