Believing is Not Enough….
A startling look at why believing is not enough:
You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. -James 2:19, NAB
Over the past few verses of James, we have discussed the importance of faith in our lives. But what does it mean to have faith? Does it simply mean that we believe in God? There are a lot of people who claim to believe in God, but do they have faith in Him? Is there a difference?
There is a huge difference between the two. Example: You believe that I exist. If I didn’t exist, you wouldn’t be reading this website right now. However, do you have faith in me? You have probably never met me, so would you lend me $1,000 if I needed it? Do you trust that I would pay you back?
It’s easy to believe that Jesus existed. There is plenty of historical evidence that points to it. Believing in God the Father is a bit more difficult, but there are theories in science that point to our Creator. Still, none of that matters if we do not put our faith in Him.
As St. James said, even the demons believe that God exists, yet somehow, I doubt they will be finding their way to heaven any time soon. In fact, it was their rejection of faith in Him that sent them on a downward path in the first place.
Believing is not enough. It is only the first step. Once we believe in Christ, we need to put our trust, our hope, and our faith in Him to receive the grace He is freely offering. Believing is a matter of the mind, while faith is a product of the soul. Have you given your soul to Christ?
