As Christians, we hold a special place in God’s heart:
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. -James 1:18, NAB
In a harvest, the firstfruits are the culmination of the labor put in beforehand. After months of hard work, the harvest can finally begin. Many traditions hold that this first part of the harvest is special, and it is often offered to God as a sacrifice.
If all of creation is the harvest, Christians are the firstfruits. We are the first to accept the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. We are the result of God’s hard work over the centuries. Finally, the seeds He planted throughout creation can be harvested.
When you complete a major task, there is a sense of accomplishment and a joy that comes along with it. For instance, your first painting, your first car repair, your first touchdown, or your first service project will always hold a special place in your heart. Even if you go on to repeat the same accomplishment, the firstfruits of your labor will always be special.
I imagine that Waking Up Catholic will be the same for me. Regardless of how many books I go on to write after this one, this book will always be special to me. It is the firstfruits of years worth of writing labor.
Now, any of our accomplishments are minor in comparison to God’s work in creation. If these moments mean this much to us, imagine how much God adores the firstfruits of His labor!
From the beginning, God had a plan. We, as Christians, are the result of that plan. The time for the harvest has come, and we are the firstfruits of God’s labor.
