The Habit of Going to Mass…
Can people see the effect of the sacraments, especially going to Mass, in your daily life?
Ground that has absorbed the rain falling upon it repeatedly and brings forth crops useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is rejected; it will soon be cursed and finally burned. -Hebrews 6:7-8, NAB
We are called, as Catholics, to attend Mass each week. For some, they are continuing a tradition that began when they were kids, and they are simply in the habit of going to Mass. They are there due to a sense of duty – nothing more. But the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, should mean more to us than that.
Attending Mass each week should renew our faith and strengthen us on our journey. It waters the seeds of our faith through the body and blood of our Lord. As we grow, what fruits come forth? Can the world see the impact of the sacraments on our lives?
Today’s verse warns us about this. We cannot be in the habit of going to Mass while continuing to live a sinful lifestyle. What we do on Sunday does little good for us if we are rebellious the rest of the week.
If we continue to do the Lord’s work each week, we will be strengthened and renewed by Mass on Sunday – receiving God’s blessings on our lives; however, if we do the opposite, we cannot expect to receive those same blessings.
Do not fall into the habit of going to Mass; it should be your first priority. And do not leave Mass on Sunday feeling fulfilled just to return to a sinful lifestyle. Let the gifts of the Mass renew your heart as you begin this week. Continue to do the Lord’s work, and you will receive God’s full blessings for your efforts.
