Anchor of the Soul…

Through the wind and waves, we can place our faith, hope, and trust in Christ:

This we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil, where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.  -Hebrews 6:19-20, NAB

In the great sea of life, we will be tossed around by the wind and waves.  We are a tiny boat in a large sea, and on our own, we will not survive.  Our only hope is to place our trust in Christ, the anchor of the soul.

What is the point of an anchor?  Anchors are used to keep a boat in the same spot for an extended period of time.  Without it, the boat would be pulled by the current or the waves, and it would be impossible to stay in one place.  Even in calm water, a boat may seem to stand still, but even then, it may slightly drift away.

In our lives, when we have found a place of faith, we need to anchor ourselves to Christ because, like the boat, we want to stay in this place.  When the storms come, He will help us to stand firm.  When life calms down, He will ensure that we will not just drift away.

Truly, this is one of the most overlooked aspects of faith.  When we first find or come back to the faith, it is an exciting place to be. Someday, though, the storms of life will come.  Will we hold our ground?  Or, our passion for the faith will dwindle, and even in the calmest waters, we begin to drift with the slightest current.

With the help of an anchor, a boat will stand firm in one spot.  Sure, the wind and waves may push the boat around, but the anchor will always stay put.  Even in the slightest current, the boat may drift a little, but never too far off.  In that way, storms can never push us too far, and we will never drift beyond reach.  Christ will always keep us anchored where we need to be.

Do not let yourself be tossed around by the storms of life, and do not let complacency drift you away in the still waters.  Put your hope in Christ, the anchor of the soul, and you will stay exactly where you want to be.
