A Biblical notion takes on new meaning in the digital age:
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching. -Hebrews 13:9, NAB
It’s not difficult to understand the meaning of this verse. There are plenty of false, incorrect, strange teachings out there to quickly lead us in the wrong direction – and away from God. With the help of the Internet, this has gone to a whole new level.
Sometimes, people get too comfortable with the Internet. Because they can see something in writing, they assume that it’s true, but it doesn’t take much to throw together a few web pages or to start a blog. Anyone with a little free time can start a website.
WakingUpCatholic.com was born for this very reason. With so many websites out there spreading false ideas about the Catholic Church, I wanted to create a place for people to find the answers they were looking for. Most importantly, I wanted to help them find the Truth, Jesus Christ.
This is also why I often refer to Scripture and the Catechism in my writing – to show that I am not just making this stuff up. These are not my personal, private revelations; they are the teachings of the Church taken directly from her most important works.
In the end, I cannot even claim to know the full truth. There may be times that I get it wrong. Truly, there is only one source we can fully trust: the Church.
We have to be careful while browsing the Internet. Do not trust or believe everything you read. The World Wide Web is filled with as many lies as it is truths. When trying to answer life’s most important questions, always turn to the Church for answers.
