Yesterday, Today, and Forever….
If you were asked what makes Christ relevant today, one verse says it all:
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. -Hebrews 13:8, NAB
Is Christianity still relevant in the world today? Does the cross have the same power it had 2,000 years ago? Can the Catholic Church remain relevant in the modern world?
The world is more inconsistent than a boat adrift at sea. It sways back and forth as society and popular opinion are in a constant state of change. Some believe that remaining relevant requires keeping up with these constant changes, but Christ takes a different approach.
As we are tossed around on the seas of life, Christ stands firmly like a lighthouse on the shore. We may be struggling to survive the crashing waves, but Christ is a light off in the distance guiding us back home again.
During calmer seas, we may come closer to shore and see Christ’s light more clearly. At other times, rough seas and thick fog might make it difficult to see Christ off in the distance. Whether we can see Him clearly or not, He is there waiting for the storms to clear.
Our view of Christ may change, but He never will. As the verse tells us today, He is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” He stands as a beacon of hope – ready to guide the most wayward sailor back home again.
The world will leave you battered and bruised as you try to keep up with its constant change, but you can find comfort and healing in our Lord who will never change – who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
