The Lasting City….
Are you prepared to leave your old life behind?:
Let us then go to him outside the camp, bearing the reproach that he bore. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the one that is to come. -Hebrews 13:13-14, NAB
Jerusalem’s time was short. We don’t know exactly when the book of Hebrews was written, but we know that in a few short years (70 A.D. to be exact) Jerusalem would fall to the Romans. When it fell, the temple was destroyed with it.
The Jewish faith centered around the temple. Even today, the Jewish people want nothing more than to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. They still cling to the hope that Jerusalem will again return to its full glory.
But Jerusalem is not a lasting city, and neither is Chicago, New York, Tokyo, or London. Wherever you may live, you will not find salvation in the city or small town you call home. We will not find it here on earth; we have to turn our eyes upward to heaven.
Still, many people seek the meaning of life in this world. They hope that their relationships, possessions, careers, and accomplishments will give them purpose, yet nothing we do in this world will ever be able to.
Our only hope is to look to heaven. There, we will find the lasting city and the purpose of our existence. We will be with our Lord and Creator, and in the midst of His full love, we will find something greater than we could ever find here in this life.
You will not find meaning in the things you hold most dear: your relationships, possessions, or even your legacy. Instead, turn your life over to Christ, and He will show you a greater life than you could have ever imagined.
