Hebrews 13:10-12

A New Sacrifice….

Jesus brought a new sacrifice to the people, but first, they had to leave their old ways behind:

We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. The bodies of the animals whose blood the high priest brings into the sanctuary as a sin offering are burned outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also suffered outside the gate, to consecrate the people by his own blood.  -Hebrews 13:10-12, NAB

Not only did Jesus bring a new sacrifice to the people – He was the sacrifice.  Jesus offered a path to redemption that the world had never seen before.  Still, many tried to cling to the old ways and the Law they had grown up with.

There are many aspects of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross that reflect the practices of the Old Testament Jewish sacrifices, such as His suffering outside the gate.  However, offering His own blood in the place of an animal brought that practice to a new level.

By offering Himself instead, Jesus put an end to the old ways.  He is offering us one final, complete sacrifice that consecrates everyone who comes to His new altar.

Those that continued to serve at the old tabernacle had no right to eat of this new sacrifice because they would not leave their old ways behind.  Similarly, we too have to leave our old ways behind if we want to approach the altar of Christ.

Christ offers us a new sacrifice, a new path, a new direction to our lives.  The way has been marked before us, but it’s up to us to take the first step on that journey.
