Stand Up Straight…
In the midst of difficult times, we must force ourselves to stand up straight:
So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed. -Hebrews 12:12-13, NAB
This verse comes immediately after we learn to accept the discipline of the Lord. In these times of struggle, the author of Hebrews is challenging us to muster every amount of strength we have to pick ourselves back up again.
Many times, when we see someone enduring hardships, we can see it in their whole body. Yes, we hear it from their lips, but we also see it in how they carry themselves – the way they walk, the way they stand, their overall posture.
Stand up straight in difficult times! Our burdens are heavy enough without allowing it to impact our physical bodies, as well. Have the courage to remain strong, both physically and mentally, during these challenges.
If we allow our bodies to be overcome, it will impact us spiritually, as well. As our bodies are racked and beaten, our souls will begin to feel the same way. On the flip side, as we gather the strength to physically stand up straight, our minds and spirits will surely do the same.
It reminds me of popular scenes from movies. The hero is beaten. His body is bruised and bloodied, and it seems that the bad guy has won. But at that moment, the hero picks himself off the ground, slowly rises, straightens himself up, and turns to face his adversary. His spirit gave him strength, and his body empowered his spirit in return.
The Christian life requires heroic strength to stand up straight in the midst of adversity. When life leaves you battered and bruised, let your faith give you the courage to face any challenge that may come your way.
