Jesus: The Ultimate Hero of Our Faith…
Hebrews 11 focused on Old Testament heroes, but now in Hebrews 12, we look at Jesus, the ultimate hero of our faith:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. -Hebrews 12:1-3, NAB
The Old Testament is filled with stories about men and women of heroic faith, but we now shift our attention to the Gospels and the ultimate act of heroism: Jesus’ giving His life for us on the cross.
The stories we have covered over the past few weeks should inspire us to a deeper, stronger faith. However, life is a long race. We may grow weary and tired over time. Eventually, these stories may not motivate us enough to keep going.
Christ’s sacrifice can inspire us to a new level. Our faith in Him can give us the endurance we need to carry on. Jesus infuses our spirits with the faith, hope, and strength we need to finish the race.
Jesus held nothing back. He laid everything on the line and gave Himself completely on the cross. We can follow His example when we need to do the same. When life asks us to give everything we have, we can simply follow in the footsteps of Christ.
Life is a marathon that we cannot finish strongly on our own, but by turning to Christ for faith and inspiration, we will find the strength we need to finish the race and even go the extra mile.
