The Faith of Enoch…
Today, we read about another character from Genesis who showed amazing faith:
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and “he was found no more because God had taken him.” Before he was taken up, he was attested to have pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. -Hebrews 11:5-6 NAB
Enoch was a descendant of Adam and the great-grandfather of Noah. We know little about Enoch, but his faith must have been great because God saved him from death:
Then Enoch walked with God, and he was no longer here, for God took him. -Genesis 4:5, NAB
Enoch walked with God. He was a man who followed God’s will and plan for His life. God was leading him down a path, and Enoch never left God’s side. The author of Hebrews tells us that this is a testament to the faith of Enoch.
This lesson teaches us, first and foremost, that we can only please God by our faith. Regardless of how great our actions may be, they mean little without faith. But what kind of faith pleases God?
Simple. This verse tells us that we simply need to believe that God exists and seek Him throughout our lives. That’s it. It’s just that simple. Believe in God and seek to follow His will, and you will begin to follow the same path as Enoch.
Do not seek to please God with a host of mighty deeds. Instead, please God with the depth, strength, and steadfastness of your faith. That is what God truly wants from us.
