The Faith of Moses, Part 1…
Today’s verse discusses one of the most historic characters from the Old Testament – Moses:
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; he chose to be ill-treated along with the people of God rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin. He considered the reproach of the Anointed greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the recompense. -Hebrews 11:24-26, NAB
The faith of Moses’ parents definitely had an impact on him as we see the faith of Moses shape the world for generations to come. The author of Hebrews shows us how his faith led him to choose the riches of God over the riches of man.
As the adopted son of the pharoah’s daughter, Moses had the opportunity to live a privileged life, but instead, he chose to give up that life to be one of God’s people. This was a bold choice for a man in his position.
The story reminds me of St. Francis of Assisi who chose to give up a privileged life in his pursuit of God. He was not afraid of poverty; he embraced it. Like Moses, his radical choice has made an impact on the world that continues to this day.
How many of us would make the same choice? Could you give up your career to follow God full time? Would you give up your financial security to follow God’s will? These are challenges that many struggle with – myself included.
In our pursuit of God, we may have to give up the riches of this world to gain the riches of heaven, but it is a pursuit well worth the effort.
