Born Under the Law…
When the time was right, Christ was born under the Law so that we might be saved from it:
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption. -Galatians 4:4-5, NAB
God’s ultimate act of love was the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself as a Man and gave His life for us on the cross. He was fully God – and fully man. He experienced everything any normal man would experience, from birth until death.
At any point in time, God the Father could have reached down from Heaven and freed us from the Law, but we would still owe a debt because of it. By sending His Son to live under the Law, He could pay our debt for us.
That was the key. It was not enough to free us from the Law; He had to pay our debt, as well. Mankind existed before the Law, yet still owed a debt for our sins; therefore, simply lifting the Law does not lift us from our debt.
Death is the punishment for our sins, including our sins under the Law. To overcome death, then, meant that Jesus had to overcome the Law also. He could only do that by living under the Law flawlessly – something we could never do.
We often focus on the saving work of Jesus’ death on the cross, but let’s not forget that He had to live His life first. Jesus’ birth, His childhood on the run from Herod, His temptation in the desert, and His years of ministry all led to His death and our salvation. We are freed from our sins because of Jesus’ life and death, from His mother’s womb to the cross on Calvary.
