Receiving the Spirit Through Faith…
Our faith in God will draw us nearer to the Holy Spirit:
I want to learn only this from you: did you receive the Spirit from works of the law, or from faith in what you heard?-Galatians 3:2, NAB
In the debate over works vs. faith, St. Paul asks one question: do we receive the Spirit through faith or through our works? The answer, obviously, is that we draw closer to the Holy Spirit, as well as the Father and Son, through faith, not works.
Faith is the key to our relationship with God. If we believe that God the Father created the world, it is by faith. If we believe that Jesus performed miracles, it is by faith. If we believe that God the Son brought salvation on the cross, it is by faith. And if we believe the Holy Spirit works through us, it is by faith. Without faith, we could not believe in any of these.
Faith is the mortar that holds the bricks of our beliefs together. Without faith, our beliefs would be a pile of loosely-held stones – sure to fall at the first great wind. We need faith to cement together our beliefs into a mighty fortress, able to withstand the storms of life.
Sadly, there are those in the Church who hold strong beliefs yet have little faith in their heart. Eventually, life brings a series of calamities, and their once strong beliefs crumble before their eyes. We must ensure that this does not happen to us.
Let faith draw you closer to God – faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As you draw closer to Him, your life will be enriched with the blessings and graces of the Holy Spirit.
