Revealing Our Sins…
Why would God give us the Law if we cannot live up to it? To show us our sinful ways:
Why, then, the Law? It was added for transgressions, until the descendant came to whom the promise had been made; it was promulgated by angels at the hand of a mediator. Now there is no mediator when only one party is involved, and God is one. -Galatians 3:19-20, NAB
The Law serves at least one purpose: revealing our sins to us. Without the Law, we would rely on our own moral compass, but unfortunately for us, our compasses do not exactly point true north. The Law, then, acts as a guide to get us going in the right direction.
God had made a promise to Abraham, but until the time to fulfill it would come, He needed to prepare the Jewish people beforehand. The Father would send His Son as a Savior, but first, He needed to show them that they needed saving in the first place.
The Law is set up as an agreement. God had His duties to fulfill, and Israel had its own end of the bargain to hold up. If the Jews could fulfill their portion, God would offer them salvation, but the Jews could not live up to the standards of the Law. We learn that an agreement like this will never work. Mankind is too weak to live up to its standards, and our sins are revealed to us.
Meanwhile, God was simply waiting for the right time to send His Son. By sending His Son, the Father would be fulfilling the promise made to Abraham. This promise required nothing of Abraham – there was nothing that Abraham needed to accomplish. Instead, the burden fell completely on God.
Man cannot live up to the standards of the Law, but God always fulfills His promises. In this way, our sins are revealed to us, as well as God’s perfect love. The only covenant that would work between God and man is the one where God takes complete responsibility.
We live in a time when God’s promise has already been fulfilled. We do not have to live by the letter of the Law to earn salvation; instead, Christ has come already to offer it to us. Recognize your sin, let go of the Law, and embrace your faith in Jesus Christ. Only through faith will you find salvation.
