Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
On the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, I would like to reflect on this quote:
“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” -St. Francis of Assisi
With these words, St. Francis reminds me of a verse from the Gospel of St. Mark when Jesus’ calls us to share the Gospel:
“Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” -Mark 16:15, NAB
Most Christians understand that Jesus wants us to share the Gospel with the world. However, St. Francis’s take on sharing the Gospel takes a different perspective. While we often think that proclaiming the Gospel begins with what we say, it is often what we do that really matters.
St. Francis was called by God to rebuild His Church. At first, St. Francis thought God was speaking about the local church that was in disrepair, but God was speaking about the larger Church as a whole. He wanted St. Francis to make an impact on the world around him.
While we have a few quotes from St. Francis (like the one I shared today), most people know more about his actions. People have heard stories of his radical way of life and commitment to his faith. St. Francis’s words may have touched the people around him, but his actions have impacted generations.
Of course, sharing the Gospel does not require that we become a monk or buy a brown robe. Evangelization is not something reserved for a select few; it is something that every Christian man and woman is called to do. We can start making a difference today using the opportunities right in front of us.
Today, on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, let’s follow his example and share the Gospel with a fallen world. We can stop thinking of the right thing to say and simply let our actions do the talking.
