Feast of St. Clare of Assisi

1 John 2:6…

In addition to our normal Bible verse, on the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi, I would also like to reflect on this quote from her:

“Gaze upon Him, consider Him, contemplate Him, as you desire to imitate Him.”  -St. Clare of Assisi

St. Clare calls us to be imitators of Christ, and this quote from St. Clare reminds me of 1 John 2:6, which reads:

…whoever claims to abide in him ought to live (just) as he lived.  -1 John 2:6, NAB

Some feel that this is impossible – and it is.  We know that we will never be able to fully imitate the perfect life of Christ, but that should not stop us from trying.  St. Clare did, and she serves as an example for us to follow.

St. Clare gave up her worldly possessions to embrace the same poverty as Christ.  She devoted her life to God and started her own convent (with the help of St. Francis of Assisi).  She spent her life tending the sick and serving others.  Her entire life was focused on imitating Christ.

When my wife and I chose the name Assisi Media for our new publishing company, it was not just for St. Francis – but St. Clare, as well.  Like her, we want to be imitators of Christ and devote our lives and our ministry completely to Christ.

Beyond that, there is a wonderful story of St. Clare, while laying sick in bed and unable to attend Mass, having a vision of the Mass in her bedroom.  For that reason, she was named the Patron Saint of Television in 1958.  In fact, EWTN was founded by Mother Angelica, herself a member of the Poor Clares.

On the Feast of St. Clare of Assisi, remember her call to be imitators of Christ in all that you do.  St. Clare of Assisi, pray for us!
